Bayugan Independent Film Making Workshop - Meet Mr. Bengil Bautista

Ronald Gary B. Bengil Bautista (Born March 18, 1985) is a Filipino Digital Film Director, Screenwriter, Producer, Editor from Davao City, Philippines.

Bautista studied Mass Communication in Ateneo de Davao University where he learned non-linear video editing, which made his childhood dream of making movies a reality. He then began making student films for classes and offered his services to local musicians to shoot music videos for their songs. In late 2006, Bautista was hired by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) to direct an anti-drug abuse Television Commercial starring world boxing champion and international celebrity, Manny Pacquiao.

After graduating from the university, Bautista was recruited by the Ateneo to teach Non-Linear Video Editing and eventually, Basic Video Production. His Basic Video Production class was able to produce two films that won the Mindanao Film Festival’s Best Student Film Award in consecutive years.

In late 2009, Bautista made his first short narrative film in his post-university life. The film is entitled Sandugo and was inspired by his belief that nourishment of children’s creativity at home is important. The film won multiple awards in the 5th Mindanao Flm Festival including Best Picture. Sandugo was also selected to be part of the 2nd Cinema Rehiyon and was screened at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). The following year, Bautista made two more short films, the Martial Arts Film, Ang Sipyat and the thriller, Bakak. Both films won the filmmaker awards in the 6th Mindanao Film Festival and was again selected in the Cinema Rehiyon the following year.
